Understanding Special Texts

Label

A label is a piece of information attached to a product. It tells us about the product's name, ingredients, how to use it, expiry date, and more.

📋 Parts of a Label:

• Product name – What the product is called
• Ingredients/Contents – What is inside
• Net weight – How much/heavy it is
• Directions/Instructions – How to use it
• Expiry date – When it's no longer safe to use
• Manufacturer – Who made it

Example: Food Label

Memo

A memo (memorandum) is a short written message used inside an organization or school to share information, instructions, or reminders.

What is a Narrative Text?

A narrative text is a type of text that tells a story. It entertains readers with creative, imaginative, or real events arranged in a sequence. Indonesian folktales are perfect examples!

📌 Purpose

To entertain, amuse, or teach moral lessons through storytelling.

📌 Language Features

• Past tense (lived, went, said)
• Time connectives (once upon a time, then, finally)
• Action verbs & dialogue
• Descriptive language

Generic Structure

Orientation

Introduces the characters, setting (time & place), and situation.

The problem or conflict that the characters face.

🚢 Malin Kundang

West Sumatra

Orientation
A long time ago, in a small village near the coast of West Sumatra, there lived a poor woman named Mande Rubayah and her son, Malin Kundang. They lived alone because Malin's father had passed away.

Complication
Malin left home to seek fortune. He became a wealthy merchant and married a beautiful woman. When he returned to his village, his old mother ran to him, but Malin refused to acknowledge her. He was ashamed of his poor mother.

Resolution
His mother was heartbroken and cursed him: "If you are truly not my son, then turn into stone!" Suddenly, a terrible storm came and Malin's ship was destroyed. Malin Kundang turned into a stone.

Moral
Always respect and honor your parents, no matter how successful you become.

🌋 Tangkuban Perahu

West Java

Orientation
Long ago, there lived a beautiful princess named Dayang Sumbi in West Java. She accidentally dropped her weaving tool and promised to marry whoever returned it. A dog named Tumang brought it back — he was actually an enchanted prince.

Complication
They had a son named Sangkuriang. One day, Sangkuriang discovered Tumang was his father and ran away. Years later, he met a beautiful woman — not knowing she was his mother, Dayang Sumbi. He proposed to her. When she realized the truth, she set an impossible task: build a lake and a boat before dawn.

Resolution
Sangkuriang nearly finished, but Dayang Sumbi tricked the roosters into crowing early. In anger, Sangkuriang kicked the unfinished boat upside-down, creating the mountain Tangkuban Perahu ("upturned boat").

Moral
Never give up on integrity; anger leads to destruction.

🥒 Timun Mas (Golden Cucumber)

Central Java

Orientation
Once upon a time, a lonely old woman named Mbok Srini prayed for a child. A giant gave her cucumber seeds and promised a daughter — but she must return the child when she turned seventeen.

Complication
The girl, Timun Mas, grew up beautiful. When the giant came to take her, Mbok Srini gave Timun Mas magical items from a hermit: cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and shrimp paste.

Resolution
Timun Mas ran and threw the items behind her. The seeds became a cucumber forest, the needles became bamboo spikes, the salt became a sea, and the shrimp paste became a boiling mud lake. The giant drowned and Timun Mas was free.

Moral
Bravery and resourcefulness can overcome any obstacle.
